Centri 255 Quantifying trace odorants in water by GC–MS with trap-based preconcentration: Assessing SPME and high-capacity sorptive extraction
This study describes the use of the new Centri sample automation and concentration platform to extract and quantify trace-level odorants in water, using two headspace sampling methods – multi-phase SPME fibers or HiSorb high-capacity sorptive extraction probes – in conjunction with trap-based preconcentration and GC–MS. Performance for the target analytes IPMP, IBMP, 2-MIB, 2,4,6-TCA and geosmin was within the requirements of ISO 17943 and GB 5749, with linearities >0.996 and mean MDLs of the order of 1 ppt. We also describe the key attributes of each sampling method, and discuss the options offered by Centri that allow the optimum choice to be made based on specific application requirements.

Centri 254 Identifying low-level odorants in wine by automated high-capacity sorptive extraction with GC–MS
This study shows that immersive sorptive extraction using high-capacity HiSorb probes, automated on the new Centri multi-mode sampling and concentration system for gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), can be used to screen wine for ppb levels of two yeast-derived spoilage compounds, as well as a range of other compounds.
Centri 250 Correlating consumer sensory experience of apple aroma with VOC profiles acquired by automated TD–GC–MS
This study shows that data acquired using the new Centri® automated multi-mode sampling and concentration system for gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) can be used to generate useful insights into the aroma profiles of foods. In the example investigated, the headspace profiles of two apple cultivars are sampled onto sorbent tubes, which are then analysed on Centri. The results of this analysis are then correlated with consumer sensory experience to highlight key volatiles of interest.

Centri 253 Quantitative determination of volatile organic pollutants in water using headspace–trap GC–MS
This study shows that headspace samples acquired on the new Centri automated multi-mode sampling and concentration system for gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) can be used to quantify a wide range of volatile organic pollutants in water. Analysis of an 83-component standard based on the list in US EPA Method 524.2 showed chromatographic performance within the requirements of the method, as indicated by the mean values for linearity (R2 0.9990), reproducibility
(6.9% RSD) and analyte recovery (90%), and a mean detection limit of 0.13 ppb.
